  • Current legislation in Louisiana permits non-smokable forms of medical marijuana such as oils and edibles.  The plant material that is more commonly used will not be medically available.
  • Doctors are authorized to “recommend” medical cannabis to qualifying patients.
  • There are no rules or regulations in place allowing the cultivation and dispensing of medical marijuana, meaning there is nowhere for patients to safely access medical marijuana.
  • Current legislation states that all cultivated cannabis must be grown with the “lowest acceptable levels of THC available through scientifically accepted methods.”
  • When the state does adopt provisions to address the sale and growth of medical cannabis, it is expected that it will be distributed through licensed pharmacies.

How can I get a Louisiana Medical Cannabis Card?

Patient’s with a qualifying condition (see below) can receive a recommendation for medical marijuana from their doctor.  Currently, the state has not implemented provisions to address the cultivation and distribution of cannabis, leaving patients with no access in the state.

What are the qualifying conditions for Medical Cannabis in Louisiana?

Currently, there are only a handful of qualifying conditions for medical marijuana in the state.

  • Individuals undergoing Chemotherapy
  • Cancer
  • Seizure Disorders; including those characteristic of epilepsy
  • Severe and persistent muscle spasms, including those characteristic of Multiple Sclerosis and Crohn’s disease
  • Cachexia

Dispensaries sell legal cannabis, and cannabis products, to responsible adults in compliance with local regulations.

Louisiana Dispensary Licenses

Currently, the state has not added any provisions to address the cultivation and dispensing of medical cannabis to qualified patients.  Once the state enacts regulations allowing growth and sale, the sale portion is expected to be handled by licensed pharmacies.

Grower (also commonly referred to as Producers or Cultivators) – Cultivators are responsible for growing cannabis. Mature plants are harvested and transferred to a Processor.

Louisiana Cultivation Center Licenses

The state is yet to address how they will handle cultivation of medical marijuana.

Laboratories can test cannabis for concentration and contaminants.  Prior to entering the consumer market, all regulated cannabis is required to undergo Quality Assurance testing.

At this time, there has not been any discussion regarding potential lab testing for medical marijuana.

At this time, the state has not designated a formal department to handle the state’s medical marijuana program.  When they do, it will likely be the Louisiana Department of Health.
